Physics science fair project idea1/22/2024 It's interesting to see how a very slow event can spread news so quickly. A similar experiment to the Queensland pitch drop was set up in Dublin, and the video of the moment the pitch actually dropped went viral on the internet. There's a live web stream that allows anyone to watch the glass funnel and wait for the fateful moment. The pitch drop experiment is something we can all participate in now. He held the job for 52 years, and missed seeing the drop fall three times – by a day in 1977, by just five minutes in 1988 and finally in 2000, when the webcam that was recording the experiment suffered a power outage for 20 minutes, during which time the pitch dropped. His replacement, Professor John Mainstone, became responsible for the pitch drop experiment from 1961. Build a simple spectrophotometer to study the properties of light. Build a ballistic pendulum to study the conservation of momentum. Professor Parnell died without seeing a pitch drop. Here are some 100 original science fair projects about physics that you can use right now for your project: Build a simple electric motor. The experiment has a tragic story associated with it. The last drop fell in April 2014 and the next one is expected to fall in the 2020s. Only nine drops have fallen from the funnel. Today it's been almost 90 years since the experiment started. It took another forty years for another five drops to fall. Students spend time deep diving into a particular physics. Physics is the study of matter and how it interacts on a microscopic and macroscopic level, which means a lot of different topics can fall under physics. How slowly? Well, the first drop took eight years to fall. A physics science fair project is a physics-based research project created for a science fair or any other kind of STEM-related event. Since then, the pitch has slowly dropped out of the funnel. There's a whole lot of interesting physics at the human scale, too. He then turned the funnel upside down and cut the top off it. High School, Physics Science Projects (48 results) Physics is the study of matter what is it made of How does it behave What laws or equations describe it From subatomic particles, to the Big Bang, modern physicists study matter at a tremendous range of scales. He allowed the pitch to cool and settle – for three years. This experiment will show you just how fun that problem can be by using a real catapult to launch a ball and. He heated it and poured it into a glass funnel. In physics class, you have probably rolled your eyes at some point after being assigned a 'projectile motion' homework problem where you use equations to predict how a ball will move through the air. Not every kid gets excited about the idea of a science fair. Check out these lists for engaging challenges, and watch the learning grow. In 1927, Professor Parnell took a sample of pitch. For students especially interested in physics or engineering, STEM challenges can lead to amazing science fair project ideas. At room temperature, pitch is many billions of times more viscous than water, but it's actually fluid. You see, when pitch is at room temperature, it feels solid. Parnell was the university's first physics professor, and he wanted to show in this experiment that everyday materials, such as pitch, can have quite surprising properties. It's called the 'pitch drop' experiment and it was created by Professor Thomas Parnell at the University of Queensland, Australia. This experiment began in 1927 and has been going ever since. In this science project, you can do something similar by observing the color of flames when various chemicals are burned. In fact, it holds the Guinness World Record for being the longest-running experiment. Science Fair Project Idea Astronomers can figure out what distant stars are made of (in other words, their atomic composition) by measuring what type of light is emitted by the star. This is suitable for 9th-grade rooms if your students are still interested in scientific experiments after being exposed to formulae and equations. In today's lecture we're going to be talking about experiments, and I thought it might be interesting for you all to learn about the world's oldest continuously running laboratory experiment that is still going today. It’s simple, it’s fun, it’s cheap, and most importantly – it works. The floating Rice project is a classic and interesting one at that. How Do Roots Grow When The Direction Of Gravity Changes? Memory barrier cache coherence1/22/2024 After all, the pointed-to value is guaranteed to remain unchanged as long as the &u32 exists. just pass the value rather than a pointer. It would be nice if the compiler could represent &u32 in memory as if it were just u32, i.e. (edit: replaced asterisks with “” since HN’s Markdown has no way to escape them.)Ĭritically, Rust references have pointer identity: you can convert between references and raw pointers, and if you convert a const u32 to &u32 and back to const u32, the pointers are guaranteed to compare equal. In reality, the optimizer can always remove indirections when it can prove that doing so doesn’t affect visible semantics, but that applies equally to raw pointers and references. Yes, they are – well, as much as raw pointers are. But if you asked me ten years ago I'd have said they wouldn't have made it to 56 cores, either. It's hard to imagine their current methods scaling to 1k cores. Or Intel may start to allow developers to relax memory correctness guarantees on a process by process granularity in their own progress to high core counts. That redis fork that adds threads maybe not. The other way it might play out is a race to very high core counts as the main differentiator, providing single socket performance worth the hassle of not being able to run everything on it in a rock solid way. There's still plenty of room to undercut Intel's historical 60% gross margins even if you're shipping largely interchangeable products. It may sacrifice some of their advantage but avoid being known as the CPU equivalent of a Ford Pinto. I agree that it will be a large power penalty, but the alternative may end up being the long tail of software suffering subtle concurrency correctness issues that just aren't there on x86. I just wanted to reassure myself that my understanding was correct and further perhaps help someone not seeing this issue (as this is a very easy trap to fall into). The assertion should rather be:ĭon't get me wrong, I think the blogpost is a great explanatory article about memory ordering and the example is rather contrived. I made a small playground which demonstrates the segfault. This is due to the use of `slice::from_raw_parts` where `self.samples` is left as a `usize` and hence takes a much bigger slice than what was allocated (the leftover of the truncate operation). Further by using a number that's bigger than a `u32`, this example contains undefined behavior. I also found this page in the nomicon about casting: ĮDIT2: As I thought casting a `usize` which is 64-bits to a `u32` causes it to be truncated and hence the assertion is always true. Isn't the following statement always true, as casting using `as` will silently ~~overflow~~ truncate the `u32` if `usize` is 64-bits?ĮDIT: I know it's a contrived example, but I was just curious if my understanding is correct. If anyone is aware of a case where the hierarchical thread cache model makes a prediction different from the reordering-based model, I would love to hear about it. I think that you would have to construct a somewhat of a clever case in order for the cache hierarchy to make a difference, though. To be even more accurate, you should assume that the thread caches can form an arbitrary large hierarchy, and so you cannot assume that a read is served only from two possible places – main memory or the thread’s cache. The thread cache model is also accurate for most intents and purposes. I find the explanation based on imaginary thread caches more intuitive than the more commonly used explanation based on operation reordering. NET memory model, and is based purely on publicly available information. This blog post reflects my personal understanding of the. Is the entire imaginary thread cache flushed to main memory after the operation?.Is the entire imaginary thread cache refreshed from main memory before the operation?.New Thread(() => regionįor each operation, the table shows two things: This program never terminates (in a release build): For example, if one thread updates a regular non-volatile field, it is possible that another thread reading the field will never observe the new value. The memory model defines what state a thread may see when it reads a memory location modified by other threads. The memory model is a fascinating topic – it touches on hardware, concurrency, compiler optimizations, and even math.

New on hbomax1/22/2024 ➽ If you’re using one of its TV apps, Max opens on a blue screen, zooming in on a bit of refreshed logo animation accompanied by an echoey sound effect punctuated by a couple of percussive thumps. ➽ Its website already redirects from to max.com and already houses plenty of content from the likes of HGTV, Discovery, TLC, and the Food Network. Users will spot some changes immediately: Said Whitworth, “We wanted that transition to not be jarring or shocking, to make sure that customers could feel familiar with it, but hopefully, take advantage of a number of improvements.” Subscribers who had Discovery+ but are switching to Max for the sake of convenience may find the new service a little different, and HBO Max users will see a layout they’ll mostly recognize. Discovery, who oversaw the service’s design and user-interface makeover. “We really wanted to make sure that it was an evolution and that it would be familiar to all of our customers, but improved,” said Tyler Whitworth, head of product at Warner Bros. In the end, Max doesn’t look that different from HBO Max. The new Max app is a little bluer and feels slimmed down, which is somewhat counterintuitive because a lot of content has been added from corporate cousin Discovery+ (which isn’t going anywhere). Starting today, if you pop open your HBO Max app to try to watch the latest episode of Succession, you might be greeted with a revised layout - or a prompt to download a new app in its place. Max’s big move doesn’t look that big after all, at least not on the surface.

Skate city ps41/22/2024 I had to drastically unlearn controls form other popular skateboarding games in order to make room for how Skate City wanted me to play.įortunately Skate City leans on a fast retry system, so these issues don’t stagnate for too long. Your skater will move in and out of the environment in context with whatever grindable object is present, which could be rather odd feeling at times, especially when an object looked grindable but wasn’t. There’s also some difficulty within its side-scrolling presentation, which can make it unclear when you are setting yourself up to grind a ledge or rail. Even simple “perform this trick” challenges became tests of if the inputs on certain tricks would even register properly. Along with the simple stylized visuals that betray Skate City’s mobile origins, the soundtrack is a defining aspect of the game and does a lot in terms of tying it back to Snowman’s previous work.Īnd it’s a good thing the music and muted visuals are there to chill you out, because some of Skate City’s challenges can get rather frustrating with the game’s imprecise controls. Perhaps the most notable feature in Skate City that helps it capture that zen experience is its original lo-fi soundtrack, which can actually help with getting into the right groove and mood needed to start diving into Skate City’s more nuanced concepts. But if you pace yourself, use Skate City as a bit of downtime between other things, it becomes a zen experience that can help erase the pressures of a long day or ease tensions after heated multiplayer matches in other games. This is, after all, an Apple Arcade game that was designed to be played in short spurts on your phone. When played for more than an hour or two at a time, Skate City begins to introduce a lot of repetition. The added cosmetic options don’t stand out much in Skate City’s particular style, and as I poured money into upgrading my stats, I could only notice the smallest of differences in things like Speed, Pop, Balance, and Spin. However, the available rewards aren’t all that enticing. Completing these assorted challenges rewards points that can be spent on new looks and upgrades for your skater. The endless mode also has a big task list to tackle if you absolutely need the chase of something to keep you coming back. Skate City has three levels to choose from, which you can either skate in endlessly (the level loops) or try to master a series of 21 specific curated challenges such as landing specific tricks or earning points while outrunning the police. The combos here are short and sweet, and as such, the multiplier only goes up to a max of four so you don’t have to feel like you need to chain them together. You aren’t about to pull off massive air or endlessly long grinds like in Tony Hawk’s. Skate City is grounded in a realism of street skating, so you won’t find any big ramps or vert pipes here. Holding or mashing X makes your skater move forward. Each stick is used to perform tricks, while the shoulder buttons can assist in grinds, spins, and manuals. Control wise, it takes some clear inspiration from the Skate series, almost landing in a middle ground between Skate and OlliOlli. It’s a side-scroller with a very muted art style. Originally released on Apple Arcade in 2019, Skate City is another relatively simple concept.

Covid deaths in us by day1/22/2024 The supplementary file is also updated on a weekly basis and contains information on the deaths of patients who have died in hospitals in England and tested positive for COVID-19. This file also contains a breakdown by region for those where no positive result was received, but COVID-19 was mentioned on their death certificate.ĬOVID 19 total announced deaths 30 March 2023 This file contains breakdowns by region, age group and NHS trust for those who tested positive for COVID-19. All deaths are recorded against the date of death rather than the day the deaths were announced. The total announced file is updated weekly on a Thursday and contains information on the deaths of patients who have died in hospitals in England and either tested positive for COVID-19 or where no positive test result was received for COVID-19, but COVID-19 was mentioned on their death certificate. Some information on the different methodologies used to report on COVID-19 deaths by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has been made available by the the ONS and can be accessed via the link below: Data Notesĭata-notes-for-COVID-19-daily-deaths-publication Frequently Asked QuestionsĬOVID 19 Daily Deaths – Frequently Asked Questions CPNS user guideĪ guide for providers on how to submit data to the COVID-19 Patient Notification System (CPNS) can be found here: In this type of circumstance, a positive COVID-19 test result may be received subsequently, and the record would therefore be revised. An example of a revision may be where a death is reported to NHS England where no positive COVID-19 test result is recorded by the hospital trust, but where COVID-19 is later recorded on the death certificate. As a result, the data available is improved. NOTE: As part of a continual process to improve the quality and accuracy of the dataset recording COVID-19 -related deaths in English hospitals, revisions may be made to historic data included in each day’s publication. The Office for Statistics Regulation, on behalf of the UK Statistics Authority, has reviewed them against several key aspects of the Code of Practice for Statistics and regards them as consistent with the Code’s pillars of Trustworthiness, Quality and Value These statistics have been produced quickly in response to developing world events. This approach makes it possible to compile deaths data on a daily basis using up to date figures. These figures do not include deaths outside hospital, such as those in care homes. This results in a lag between a given date of death and exhaustive daily death figures for that day. Cases are only included in the data when the positive COVID-19 test result is received, or death certificate confirmed with COVID-19 mentioned. For example, a positive result for COVID-19 may occur days after confirmation of death. Interpretation of the figures should take into account the fact that totals by date of death are likely to be updated in future releases for more recent dates. When making comparisons over time these figures should not be included. This change has been introduced for deaths that occurred on 24th April 2020 and subsequently and is shown separately in the region data table only. This will be published alongside the previously named ‘weekly’ file, containing supplementary information such as breakdowns by pre-existing condition.įrom Tuesday 28 April 2020, NHS England started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no COVID-19 positive test result, but where COVID-19 is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death on part 1 or part 2 of the death certification process. The daily announced files containing reported deaths in the 24-hour time period to 4pm the day before the daily publication date ceased. The total announced file containing all reported deaths continues and will be published once per week on a Thursday. All deaths are recorded against the date of death rather than the date the deaths were announced.Īt the end of March 2023, publication of COVID-19 deaths information on the NHS England website ceased. Similar information on COVID-19 deaths will continue to be published and made available on the GOV.UK Coronavirus Dashboard.Īs from 1st July 2022, reporting moved to publication once per week on a Thursday, rather than every weekday.
